Regardless of the age and style of your home, shutters are a great choice! We have personally installed shutters in a wide range of buildings, from Georgians to new builds, and they are an ideal window dressing in any style of property.
Solid shutters were used by Victorians to secure their properties when they travelled and to insulate them at night. In arid climates, colonists used louvred shutters to reduce the heat in their homes.
Similarly, plantation houses in humid yet still extremely hot climates used slatted shutters to do the same.
Today, we have shutters that incorporate all of these styles and will complement any décor.
As quickly and efficiently as possible, our expert team will help you design the right window shutter solution to suit your needs.
Georgian houses
Georgian properties often had large downstairs windows and smaller upstairs windows, often with sash windows. Solid shutters were traditionally used on this type of property, but louvred shutters offer a more flexible and modern appearance.
Victorian houses
Many of the shutters installed on Victorian-style buildings are on bay windows. A bay window is ideal for shutters as they follow the line of the window and do not encroach into the room. It doesn't matter if you're trying to maintain a traditional look or modernize the style of this period home, our shutters will complete the look perfectly.
Edwardian houses
The style of this property is very similar to a Victorian one. Traditional sash windows look amazing dressed with narrower panels and smaller louvres. A mid-size 63mm louvre will provide good privacy without sacrificing light control, however.
Art Nouveau & Art Deco houses
This style of property typically features stained glass and ornate window treatments. This would suit shutters that can fold back clear of the window, as long as you have the clearance on either side of the window to achieve this.
1930’s houses
Steel Crittal-style windows were widely used here. Shutters can still suit this design but are best designed in a simplistic style so as not to make the window look too busy. The hidden tilt mechanism is an ideal solution to reduce vertical lines and simplify the look.
New build houses
In new-builds and contemporary homes, in particular, the popularity of shutters is on the rise. The louvres and panels of some modern properties are larger and their designs are more simplistic and elegant. Although a traditionally mounted rod may add a bit of character to the exterior look of the shutters, you might want to consider the modern hidden tilt control option if the appearance is important.
During our free home design consultation, we will conduct a careful design and consultation process in order to provide you with the best solution for your needs in terms of use and appearance of shutters.
Send us your window dimensions and we will gladly give you a guide price for your consideration, subject to our free home design visit. This is the quickest and easiest way to get an idea of what you can expect. We provide and install shutters that are custom-made to the exact millimetre of every window.
The cost of shutters varies depending on many factors so it is impossible to say, for instance, that shutters for a bay window would cost £x and shutters for a sunburst shaped window would cost £y.
Costs are affected by a number of factors, including:
- What size window or door you have
- Your choice of material (MDF is most competitively priced)
- Our Shutter Materials & Finishes page explains the differences between a traditional centre tilt rod and a hidden tilt control mechanism.
- Whether you choose a custom colour
You can send us your window dimensions before scheduling your free home design consultation, and we will send you a guide price.
There are five different louvre widths that we offer for our shutters.
As a result, there are a variety of things to consider when choosing which size to go for, for example, the height and style of your window, along with how much light and privacy you wish to achieve. During your free home design consultation, we will discuss different options with you, helping you make the right choice for your home.
47mm
The 47mm louvre is our smallest louvre and it offers maximum privacy, but it does not allow as much light in as a louvre that is wider. For this reason, it is ideal for those rooms in the house in which privacy is a priority such as small toilets, utility rooms, and walk-in wardrobes.
64mm
Among the sizes that we offer, this is the most popular size. This allows for a nice amount of light to enter the room, while at the same time maintaining a high level of privacy. The 64mm louvres are a great choice as they provide maximum flexibility, which explains their popularity.
76mm
Our 76mm louvres are popular with clients who want to maintain light in their properties, but who do not want to make the leap to a significantly bigger looking louvre.
89mm
This 89mm louvre is ideal if you have features such as lead lights on your windows as the wider louvre gives the impression that the window is not as cluttered as when a 67mm louvre is used. A larger window allows more light to enter the room, and they are an ideal choice for the downstairs living area as it allows for a generous amount of light to enter the room while still providing a moderate level of privacy.
It is also possible to choose a wider louvre if you have a view out of your window that you do not wish to lose with the shutters in place.
114mm
Here we have our widest louvre of all. If you have tall, large windows in your home where you want to let as much light as possible in, this is a great choice for you. It is also possible to choose the 114mm louvre if you have a great view out of your window, as you would with the 89mm louvre. If you are trying to add light to a dark room, why not try a wider louvered shutter, although be careful as the louvres do permit a lesser degree of privacy due to their width, and for this size louver, it is necessary to have enough tall windows to accommodate them.
All of our shutters come with a manufacturer's guarantee ranging from 3 - 10 years depending on range. Over the past decade, interior plantation shutters have become one of the most popular window dressings in the UK.
Despite the fact that they have been used as a versatile and stylish alternative to curtains and blinds in overseas countries for many years, they are now becoming more and more popular in many parts of the UK.
If you would like to install the shutters yourself (or as part of a current renovation project would like your own tradespeople to fit them) we do provide our shutters as supply only.
Our clients are always offered the opportunity to send us their window measurements so that we can provide them with a guide price before they make any final decisions. While we would like to emphasize that there is no requirement for you to do this, many clients find it a useful exercise, especially if they are not familiar with the ballpark cost for interior plantation shutters. When it comes to measuring for window shutters, one of the most frequently asked questions is how do I measure them? We can provide a diagram to help show you how, and also have a virtual consultation facility to help with this.
If you can provide us with any images, additional dimensions, and information about your project, that will help us to provide an accurate price estimate for you. Please keep in mind that if you decide to proceed, we always follow up with a technical survey at your home before placing the order.
To put it simply, yes! There is no difference in their meaning, they are just different terms that refer to the shutters that we supply and install.
Historically both colonial and plantation shutters were created for the purpose of controlling interior temperatures and increasing privacy and, although these functions are still their primary functions, the trend of creating window shutters that are aesthetically pleasing as a fashion item has definitely increased over the past few years. There are many custom options available for custom window shutters, and they are becoming increasingly popular in the UK. In the last few years, more shutters have been installed than ever before.
Plantation Shutters
This style of the louvred door was originally prevalent among traditional plantation homes, and it continues to be popular among western American and European homes, where the wider, longer louvre blades help to provide better ventilation on those hot days. It is considered that the Plantation style of shutters is seen as more modern and popular than other varieties of shutters. Therefore, a wide range of customisable options is available for these shutters.
Colonial Shutters
In some instances, colonial shutters are also known as traditional plantation shutters since they were developed in the northern region of the United States. This type of shutter is commonly found in early American homes, but is less durable than plantation shutters, and is generally more difficult to find. There are usually shorter, narrower louvres, as opposed to the wider elliptical louvres of plantation shutters.
Our Shutters
Incorporating modern manufacturing techniques, our window shutters offer an attractive and hard-wearing window dressing that combines the best of both worlds.
Almost all the shutters that we supply and install can only be used indoors or inside the home. We provide a wide range of shutters to suit everyone's needs, from the entry-level MDF shutters to the deluxe hardwood shutters.
The vast majority of the shutters we supply are louvred, but we also provide solid shutters as an alternative. More information can be found by visiting our shutters page.
As a great addition to any house, window shutters are also a great part of homeownership; however, they also may need cleaning from time to time, as with anything else in the home. If you follow these helpful tips, it will be easy to do.
Cleaning
If you have plantation shutters, you can use the brush attachment on your vacuum cleaner to sweep the nozzle gently across each louver to get rid of dust, debris and pollen that accumulates during the summer months in the home. The use of water for cleaning wooden shutters is not recommended, as this can cause the wood to get damaged and warped.
The shutters can also be cleaned using a dry microfiber cloth or duster that is made of microfiber material.
Use a soft new toothbrush to gently scrub the affected area in order to remove the small pieces of debris or build up that has collected in the corners of the shutters.
For cleaning interior shutters it is advisable not to use all-purpose cleaners since these can stain the material.
Maintenance
There might be times when the louvres on your shutters fail to stay in position from time to time. This is quite normal given that the louvres are operated on a regular basis and the panels settle after they have been installed. There is a hole on the side of the panel that connects to a screw - this is the tension screw. This can be adjusted by gently tightening this screwdriver and this will adjust the tension on the louvres.
Those are the top tips you need to keep your shutters looking as good as the day they were first installed!
Our company receives questions from customers all the time, one of which is; can I install plantation shutters with secondary glazing? Sometimes, it all depends on where the secondary glazing is placed, so the quick answer is that it can be positioned at any location.
What is secondary glazing and how does it work?
Almost all modern homes are equipped with double-glazed windows. In period properties as well as buildings that have an age of over 100 years, secondary glazing can be a more realistic choice for insulation purposes since the original glass panels may be too difficult or expensive to replace, or in some cases, they may be prohibited.
In spite of the fact that secondary glazing is an effective way to save on heating costs, it tends not to look as impressive as double glazing. In fact, this might be one of the reasons we receive so many enquiries of this nature, since interior window shutters can not only improve the look of the window, but they can also further insulate the house.
What is the best way to install shutters with secondary glazing?
As a result, we need to have a place where we can mount the shutters, and if the secondary glazing is mounted without enough space for the shutter framework to be attached, we will not be able to accommodate the shutters. In order for us to be able to install the shutters in a manner that will still allow you to use the secondary glazing in the future, as well as remove any glass that might need to be removed.
Depending on how many windows you currently have with secondary glazing, our team may be able to tell you whether or not they can be installed. If you can send us photos of your windows with secondary glazing, we will be able to confirm whether or not it can be done.
Is a secondary layer of glazing on window shutters a viable alternative to double glazing?
As opposed to double glazed windows, shutters aren't as energy efficient as these, but they will help retain heat inside the house in the winter months in addition to reducing external noise, especially if combined with secondary glazing.
There are often comments about how impressed people are with how much warmer a room feels when the panels have been shut and the louvres are closed. You can feel the cold air which has been trapped in the space between the shutter and the window whenever you open the louvres in the early morning.
We have a current lead time of approximately 6 to 16 weeks from the date of order, which could change due to ongoing shipping delays, congestion at the port and haulage problems.
We do offer quicker lead times, but for the reasons above this is subject to change.
In addition, we will ensure that you are kept updated of the progress of your order regularly.
Below is a general guide for lead times:
1 .Hardwood - 14/16 weeks ( shipped ) . On some ranges, there is an option for delivery by rail /air at an extra cost. The lead time is reduced by around 4/5 weeks if shipped by rail and 8/10 weeks if shipped by air..
2. MDF 14/16 weeks ( Shipped) with an AIRFREIGHT Option
3. Composite - produced in UK - 6/ 8 weeks
We often get asked the question of how much light shutters block out, and that is a question that we are asked regularly. We refer to blackout as 'room darkening' as shutters alone do not provide complete blackout, however, there are a variety of room darkening solutions that are available.
The one advantage of plantation shutters is that they allow light to pass through between the louvres and also between the panel and the shutter frame. Even though this is often less light than other conventional window dressings, most clients will be pleasantly surprised when they see the increase in darkness which can often be quite dramatic. As a rule of thumb, the wider the slat/louvre, the fewer there are (thus reducing light bleed) therefore providing a greater solid surface area.
Furthermore, shutters are the only practical solution for a wide variety of unusually shaped windows, such as bay windows for example.
If you are considering changing your windows, then you should absolutely replace them first before you install shutters. In order to make sure that shutters are fitted correctly, they need only be measured to the specific window and fitted once.
There is no doubt that the dimensions of the new windows will differ from the old windows, no matter how close they are, which will mean the shutters will not align correctly or might not be able to fit at all.
You also run the risk of causing damage to the frames when you remove them.
However, we do offer a service whereby we remove shutters (for decoration) and replace them when ready for a set fee.
